Behind the times...researching DVRs
So I admit, I am a little behind the times and now researching DVRs. I looked into getting the Comcast dvr, but feel that may be limiting us by using proprietary equipment and a monthly fee. PVRs...not sure if I want to have a computer always connected to the tv. Tivo seems like the only way to go, choices of equipment, ability to pay for lifetime subscription, options to expand...

look into uverse/advanced tv...their offerings might suit you.
Looked into it, but since ATT doesn't offer digital service in my area, cant use it. Sucks, its not like the co is 4 blocks away...lol.
Dish network just came out with there new box that has sling box on it. Direct TV DVR are also good and they will be expanding there current DVR'S with option to stream your recorded shows on your PC (BETA Testing) or you can go with comcast DVR but it sucks, but you can get the TiVO HD DVR like rex and have netflix stream, transfer show on your PC, Iphone, PSP and ect.
for me I like the TIVO but I dont like comcast. to bad I cant get tivo with Directv.
and no matter what you get TIVO, DRECTV, comcast, dish network, or a recordable PC it it will be running all the time even if you think its off. are you going with HD DVR's
I agree that the comcast dvr is not the way I would go. Dish network sounds like a good idea, but would have to look into their service. Don't know if I would take advantage of everything it offers. Tivo sounds like the best option. Deciding whether to go hd or standard, cost efficiency vs. quality...most of the shows we watch are standard, but why sacrafice quality? I guess I still have some homework to do.
if you have a TV that will support HD then I would get an HD box,
Directv has the most HD channels and its cheaper but no TIVO. IF your happy with SD tv then tivo series 2 are cheap and it wont matter who you get the service from you can get deals easy.
netflix streaming on tivo is still buggy. it will eventually be fixed, but if you want netflix streaming id recommend the samsung or lg bluray players that support it.
